The old city of Glasgow originally developed around Glasgow Cathedral and down the old High Street to the River Clyde via Glasgow Cross. The boundaries of Glasgow have changed on several occasions for political purposes, with many places that view themselves as part of Glasgow falling outwith the Glasgow City local authority created in 1996.
