Event Background:

The original festival is the White Nights Festival held in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The white nights is the a name given in areas of high latitude to the weeks around the summer solstice in June during which sunsets are late, sunrises are early and darkness is never complete. In Saint Petersburg, the Sun does not set until after 10 p.m., and the twilight lasts almost all night.

In 2005, Rome's Notte Bianca was held in mid-September, and the guest star was Roberto Benigni. There were similar initiatives in other cities as well. In Naples it first took place at the end of October 2005 with numerous concerts (Baglioni, Pino Daniele, 99 Posse, Almamegretta, Stadio) and theatrical and cultural events. The attendance was twice the population of Naples itself. Other Italian Notte Bianche took place in Genoa, Turin, Reggio Calabria, and Catanzaro.

Undersecretary Francesco Giro Cultural Heritage has launched an idea that probably will report a lost tradition came with the advent of Alemanno, or the White Night. In fact today the Tour said: "Now big plans for the capital Rome. Including, stresses the Secretary, another white night between 19 and 20 September to celebrate the 140 or birthday of Rome Capital.

The theme of the Warana Festival was "entertainment for the people, by the people". Over the years regular Warana features varied, but included a drama festival and eisteddfod, a writers' week, a George Street Colonial Fair, a Miss Warana Pageant and various religious, sporting and other outdoors activities. Brisbane Festival was held as a biennial festival from 1996 to 2008. During this time the festival has had two Artistic Directors, Tony Gould (1996-2004) and Lyndon Terracini (2006-2008).

Under their leadership the festival has developed into one of the most highly respected and acclaimed international arts festivals. In 2009 the festival merged with Riverfestival and the decision was made to hold the festival annually instead of biennially

Location information:

Frankfurt am Main commonly known simply as Frankfurt, is the largest city in the German state of Hesse and the fifth-largest city in Germany, with a 2009 population of 672,000. The urban area had an estimated population of 2,295,000 in 2010. The city is at the centre of the larger Frankfurt/Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region which has a population of 5,600,000[3] and is Germany's second largest metropolitan area.

In English, this city's name translates to "Frankfurt on the Main" (pronounced like English mine or German mein). The city is located on an ancient ford on the river Main, the German word for which is "Furt". A part of early Franconia, the inhabitants were the early Franks. Thus the city's name reveals its legacy as being the "ford of the Franks".
