Hurricane Irene Live Streams Online

Hurricane Irene is an active North Atlantic tropical cyclone that currently poses a significant threat to the Bahamas, the Atlantic Coast of the United States, and Atlantic Canada. The ninth named storm and first hurricane of the 2011 season, Irene developed from a well-defined Atlantic tropical wave, which showed signs of tropical development east of the Lesser Antilles. It developed atmospheric convection and a closed cyclonic circulation center, prompting the National Hurricane Center to initiate public advisories on the tropical cyclone late on August 20. Subsequent convective organization occurred as it passed the Leeward Islands, and by August 21 it moved very close to Saint Croix. The next day Irene made landfall near hurricane strength on Puerto Rico, where high winds and intermittent torrents caused moderate property damage. The hurricane strengthened as it passed into the southeast Bahamas, becoming a major hurricane on August 24.

In response to the formation of Irene, tropical storm warnings were issued for all of the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico. As Irene was forecast to make landfall on Hispaniola, a tropical storm watch was initially issued for the south coast of the Dominican Republic, though it was upgraded to a hurricane warning on August 21 after strengthening was forecast. In light of the expected intensification to hurricane status, a tropical storm warning was also issued for the northern coast of that country, while a tropical storm watch was put in effect for all of Haiti; the tropical storm warning for Puerto Rico was simultaneously upgraded to a hurricane watch. Later that day, all of the Dominican Republic was placed under a hurricane warning, with the tropical storm watch for Haiti upgraded to a warning and a tropical storm watch initiated for the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. As Irene's forecast track became justified, the latter watch was upgraded to a warning on August 22, while a hurricane watch was declared for the central Bahamas.

As NASA prepared for the arrival of Endeavour, the shuttle Atlantis was rolled out to the launch pad for its final flight, set for July 8. Thousands of Kennedy Space Center workers and their families gathered to watch.

Location information:

The John F Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is the U.S. government installation that manages and operates America's astronaut launch facilities. Currently serving as the base for the country's three space shuttles, the NASA field center also conducts unmanned civilian launches from adjacent Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (operated by the 45th Space Wing). KSC has been the launch site for every U.S. human space flight since 1968. Its iconic Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) is the fourth-largest structure in the world by volume.

Located on Merritt Island, Florida, the center is north-northwest of Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic Ocean, midway between Miami and Jacksonville. It is 34 miles (55 km) long and roughly 6 miles (10 km) wide, covering 219 square miles (570 km2). A total of 13,500 people worked at the center as of 2008.

STS-60 shuttle launch from Pad 39A on February 3, 1994All launch operations are conducted at Launch Complex 39 (LC-39), where the shuttle's major components (orbiter, external fuel tank and booster rockets) arrive, are stacked (mated) and checked out inside the VAB; then moved to Pad 39A for launch. Shuttles were also launched from adjoining Pad 39B until 2007, when it was modified for the 2009 Ares I-X launch. Both pads are on the ocean, 3 miles (5 km) east of the VAB. The Shuttle Landing Facility, among the longest runways in the world, is just to the north. From 1969–1972, LC-39 was the departure point for all six Apollo manned moon landing missions using the Saturn V, the largest and most powerful operational launch vehicle in history.

Pensacola, Florida hosts a Mardi Gras Celebration. The Pensacola celebrations also use Moon Pies in combination with beads, coins, candies & Krewe-related trades. The Pensacola festivities and the Krewes that sponsor them often are more light-hearted and family-oriented than some in other venues. The name of a number of the Krewes are puns of the names of historic Krewes in New Orleans and Mobile.

The annual Pensacola celebration, is among the oldest in the United States, dating back to 1874. Festivities typically took place on the eponymous Tuesday itself and the preceding week. The event became unorganized, having "fallen entirely into the hands of individual merry-makers and frolickers who disported themselves as their own wild merriment dictated," but was reorganized by the Clerks Union in 1900. They formed the Pensacola Carnival Association with a 12-person committee led by chairman J. I. Johnson. Priscus remained the title of the festival's ceremonial king, and Alexander Clement Blount II was named the first King Priscus of the new group.

Last year, over 600 racers participated and plans for 2010 are to take this signature event to the next level. We'd like to thank our sponsors and volunteers who support this race. We look forward to seeing everyone out on the course in December! The oil spill that flowed into the Gulf of Mexico put unprecedented strain on an already stressed marine ecosystem. While the responsible party, BP, is supposed to reimburse the affected fishermen and efforts have already begun to clean the coastline, little attention is being paid to the Gulf fisheries.

Pensacola Webcam Shows Tourists Returning to Florida Beaches

Pensacola Beach, Santa Rosa Island on Florida's Emerald Coast

Live view from Pensacola Beach as the BP oil spill concern recedes, and tourists return to the beach and ocean.

One of the major concerns surrounding the recent BP oil spill into the Gulf of Mexico was the impact on the local tourist industry, and in Florida's coastal regions in particular there were real concerns that their livelihoods were under threat.

At the peak of the crisis, tar balls were washing up onto the white sand beaches, swimming was impossible and even fishing in the gulf waters was stopped.

A week on from the plugging of the well, and with surface oil fast dispersing, the live view form one of Florida's most popular beaches at Pensacola shows that the summer season tourism is thriving once again.

New Webcam - Pensacola Beach, Florida

Pensacola Beach, Santa Rosa Island on Florida's Emerald Coast

Pensacola Beach is an unincorporated community located on Santa Rosa Island, a barrier island, in Escambia County, Florida, United States. It is situated south of Pensacola, connected via bridges spanning to the Fairpoint Peninsula and then to the island, on the Gulf of Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 2,738.

Pensacola Beach occupies land bound by a 1947 deed from the United States Department of Interior that it be administered in the public interest by the county or leased, but never "disposed"; its businesses and residents are thus long-term leaseholders and not property owners
