Event Information:

A MTV Video Music Award, also called a VMA, is awarded by the cable network MTV to celebrate the top music videos of the year. First awarded at the end of the summer of 1984, and originally as an alternative to the Grammy Awards (in the video category), the MTV Video Music Awards have often been called the "Oscars for youth", an acknowledgment of the Awards ceremony's ability to draw millions of youth from teens to 20-somethings each year. By 2001, the VMA had become a coveted award. They are presented annually, and broadcast live on MTV. The statue given to winners is an astronaut on the moon, one of the earliest representations of MTV.

Past broadcasts have been held in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, and Las Vegas. The 2009 Awards were held on September 13 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The 2010 Video Music Awards are scheduled to take place on September 12 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California.

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards were aired live on September 12 from the Nokia Theater, in Los Angeles, California. Electronic artist Deadmau5 has been announced as the "in house artist" and soundtracked the event. Lady Gaga broke two records with the year's nominations: She became the first female solo artist with two nominations in the Video of the Year category and the artist with the most nominations in a single year receiving 13 (18 including Beyoncé's "Video Phone (Extended Remix)" nominations).

Location Information:

Times Square is a major commercial intersection in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. The extended Times Square area, also called the Theatre District, consists of the blocks between Sixth and Eighth Avenues from east to west, and West 40th and West 53rd Streets from south to north, making up the western part of the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan.

Formerly named Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in April 1904 after the New York Times moved its headquarters to the newly built Times Building, which is now called One Times Square and is the site of the annual ball drop on New Years Eve. Times Square, nicknamed "The Crossroads of the World" and "The Great White Way", has achieved the status of an iconic world landmark and is a symbol of New York City and the United States.
