This live feed shows the scale of the fire:

The Wallow Fire is a currently ongoing wildfire located in eastern Arizona, United States, in the White Mountains near Alpine. As of June 7, 2011, it has burned about 311,481 acres (486.689 sq mi; 126,052 ha). About 2,700 to 3,000 people have been evacuated, with more expected. The communities of Alpine, Blue River, Greer, Nutrioso, Sunrise, Eagar, and Springerville in Arizona were evacuated. Furthermore, South Fork was under pre-evacuation notice in Arizona, while Luna was under a pre-evacuation notice in New Mexico. Additionally, the Apache National Forest was closed to the public.

Officials say the wildfire is about 10 miles (16 km) outside the adjacent towns of Eagar and Springerville, where residents are preparing to evacuate.

"If given the word, then I'm gonna go," Eagar resident Gerald McCardle told the Associated Press news agency. "We're already packed. We packed last night, and we're out of here."

Arizona Wildfire Continues to Spread, AZ Fire Cam Stream

The large Arizona wildfire is continuing to grow today, with local firefighters contending with strong, dry winds, meaning they remain unable to properly contain the blaze.

The Wallow fire is already the third-largest in the state's history, having consumed 301 square miles. This live video footage shows the fire and attempts to fight it:

Over 2,000 firefighters from across the country have joined the fight, with residents evacuating towns in the fire's path. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has described the fire as "horrific".

The fire, which started on 29 May, is threatening mountain communities in the east of the state. Smoke from the burning pine forests can be seen in the neighbouring states of New Mexico and Colorado.

Most residents of the resort town of Greer, in the White Mountains, left on Saturday, packing their belongings in to vehicles as the Wallow Fire moved closer. A blaze in 2002 burnt through 732 sq miles in the centre of the state and another in 2005 that scorched 387 sq miles near Phoenix.

Within the park lies the Grand Canyon, a gorge of the Colorado River, considered to be one of the major natural wonders of the world. The park covers 1,902 mi2 (4927 km2) of unincorporated area in Coconino County and Mohave County.

Most visitors to the park come to the South Rim, arriving on Arizona State Route 64. The Highway enters the park through the South Entrance, near Tusayan, Arizona, and heads eastward, leaving the park through the East Entrance. All park accommodations are operated by the Xanterra corporation. Park headquarters are at Grand Canyon Village, a short distance from the South Entrance, being also the center of the most popular viewpoints. Some thirty miles of the South Rim are accessible by road. A much smaller venue for tourists is found on the North Rim, accessed by Arizona State Route 67. There is no road connection between the two within Arizona except via the Navajo Bridge, near Page, Arizona, entailing a five-hour drive. Otherwise, the two rims of the Canyon are connected via Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Hoover Dam.

The rest of the Grand Canyon is extremely rugged and remote, although many places are accessible by pack trail and backcountry roads.
