Kenny Dalglish takes his Liverpool side to face his predecessor Roy Hodgson at West Brom. Ironically the records of the 2 managers in charge of Liverpool for the same amount of games are remarkably similar.

At the close of the 1991 season, a proposal for the establishment of a new league was tabled that would bring more money into the game overall. The Founder Members Agreement, signed on 17 July 1991 by the game's top-flight clubs, established the basic principles for setting up the FA Premier League. The newly formed top division would have commercial independence from the Football Association and the Football League, giving the FA Premier League license to negotiate its own broadcast and sponsorship agreements. The argument given at the time was that the extra income would allow English clubs to compete with teams across Europe.

Television money had also become much more important; the Football League received £6.3 million for a two-year agreement in 1986, but when that deal was renewed in 1988, the price rose to £44 million over four years. The 1988 negotiations were the first signs of a breakaway league; ten clubs threatened to leave and form a "super league", but were eventually persuaded to stay. As stadia improved and match attendance and revenues rose, the country's top teams again considered leaving the Football League in order to capitalise on the growing influx of money being pumped into the sport.

Chelsea play London rivals Arsenal in this early kick off at Stamford Bridge looking to bounce back from their 9 man defeat at QPR last week. They will have to manage without the suspended Didier Drogba, although Fernando Torres returns form suspension.

The Premier League is the world's most lucrative football league in terms of revenue, with combined club revenues of over £2 billion in 2008-09. It is ranked first in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) coefficients of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five years, ahead of Spain's La Liga and Germany's Bundesliga. Since 1888, a total of 23 clubs have been crowned champions of the English football system. Of the 45 clubs to have competed since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, four have won the title: Manchester United (12 titles) Arsenal (3), Chelsea (3) and Blackburn Rovers (1). The current champions are Manchester United, who won the title in the 2010–11 season.

Despite significant European success during the 1970s and early 1980s, the late '80s had marked a low point for English football. Stadia were crumbling, supporters endured poor facilities, hooliganism was rife, and English clubs were banned from European competition for five years following the events at Heysel in 1985. The Football League First Division, which had been the top level of English football since 1888, was well behind leagues such as Italy's Serie A and Spain's La Liga in attendances and revenues, and several top English players had moved abroad. However, by the turn of the 1990s the downward trend was starting to reverse; England had been successful in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, reaching the semi-finals. UEFA, European football's governing body, lifted the five-year ban on English clubs playing in European competitions in 1990 (resulting in Manchester United lifting the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1991) and the Taylor Report on stadium safety standards, which proposed expensive upgrades to create all-seater stadia in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster, was published in January of that year

St Louis Cardinals have won the 2011 World Series 4-3. The Cardinals Victory Parade starts 4pm at 18th St. and Market in downtown St. Louis, moving down Market Street to 7th St. South to Stan Musial Drive to Busch Stadium. There is also a celebration on Sunday at Busch stadium.

The Cardinals made their first World Series appearance since 2006, in which they defeated the Detroit Tigers four games to one to win their National League-leading 10th World Series title. This was manager Tony La Russa's sixth World Series appearance as manager and his third such appearance with the Cardinals. The Cardinals' last postseason appearance was in 2009, where they were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. They finished the 2010 season with a record of 86–76 (.531), finishing in second place in the National League Central standings, five games behind the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cardinals spent much of the early part of the 2011 season in first place in the NL Central standings, but dropped to second place for good on July 27. Going into September, the team trailed the Atlanta Braves in the NL Wild Card standings by 8 1⁄2 games. The Cardinals amassed a 17-8 record from September 1 to 27, while the Braves were 8-17 over that same interval. Meanwhile, on September 23, the Milwaukee Brewers clinched the NL Central division title. On September 28, with the Cardinals and Braves tied atop the Wild Card standings on the last day of the regular season, the Cardinals routed the Houston Astros 8-0, while the Braves lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 in 13 innings, securing the Cardinals' second wild card postseason berth in franchise history. St. Louis finished with a record of 90-72, six games behind the Brewers in the NL Central but one game ahead of the Braves in the Wild Card. They defeated the Phillies in the National League Division Series three games to two, and then defeated the Brewers in the National League Championship Series four games to two.

Before Game 7 in the World Series, the Cardinals replaced Matt Holliday, who sprained his wrist in Game 6, on their roster with Adron Chambers. Josh Hamilton and Michael Young had RBI doubles in the first inning against Chris Carpenter, who became the first pitcher in a decade to make three starts in one Series. David Freese had a tying, two-run double in the bottom of the first, and Allen Craig hit a go-ahead homer in the third. St. Louis added two runs off the Texas bullpen in the fifth inning without getting a hit. Yadier Molina walked with the bases loaded and Rafael Furcal was hit by a pitch, forcing in another run.
